A circulator pump's job is simple — move heated water from your boiler to your home or shop — but picking the wrong one can leave you with weak heat output or a pump that fails early. Two numbers matter most: flow rate (GPM) and head pressure (feet of head).
Flow rate (GPM) is how much water the pump can move per minute. A longer loop, more heat emitters (baseboard, in-floor loops, unit heaters), or a larger heated area generally needs higher GPM.
Head pressure accounts for resistance in your piping — length of run, number of fittings, and elevation changes. Long supply lines from an outdoor boiler to a house or shop, in particular, need enough head pressure to keep water moving efficiently.
Single-speed vs. variable-speed: A fixed single-speed pump like a Taco 009 or 007 is simple, reliable, and a straightforward swap for most residential setups. A variable-speed ECM pump adjusts output automatically and can reduce electrical draw, which is worth considering for larger or more complex systems.
