Crown Royal Stoves will provide long life if maintenance is performed correctly. The most important step is cleaning out your boiler once a year at the end of winter and the heating season.
- One last hot fire: throw cardboard or other fast-burning material into the stove and turn up the aquastat to get a full, long burn. This softens any creosote for the next step.
- Shut off the boiler and disconnect power to ensure your safety during maintenance.
- Allow the boiler to cool to a point you can safely work, and use gloves, a mask, safety glasses, and other protective gear. Be careful not to touch any metal that may still be hot.
- Clean the primary burning chamber and cleanout areas: using a scoop and the provided hoe, remove ash and soot from the firebox, air passages, and heat exchanger tubes — scraping until bare metal is seen. On a Pristine, this may require removing the side panels, the square back air chamber, or the top refractory brick to clean the secondary-burn passages. On a Multipass, give extra attention to the sides and above the water exchanging tubes, and clear ash buildup behind the ash pan.
- Inspect and clean the chimney for creosote buildup or debris, running a chimney brush down it if needed. On a Pristine, actuate the front turbulator cleanout lever one more time and clean the top section by the blower motor. On a Multipass, clean the top heat exchanger including between the 1st and 2nd heat exchangers and out into the chimney.
- Inspect the door gaskets and seals, replacing any worn-out or damaged gaskets, and adjust the doors as needed to keep proper sealing force.
- Wash the outside of the stove — car wash soap in water works well.
- Corrosion protection: spray the firebox with diesel or a 50/50 mix of diesel and used motor oil for extra protection during the off-season, when ash buildup mixed with moisture is hardest on the stove.
- Water sample: the off-season is a good time to remember to send in your annual water sample to Crown Royal Stoves.
Follow proper safety precautions throughout. If you're unsure about any step or lack experience, consult a professional technician or contact your dealer or the manufacturer for guidance.
