How to Size an Outdoor Wood Boiler for Your Home

The biggest mistake we see when people shop for an outdoor wood boiler is sizing it off square footage alone. Square footage matters, but so does insulation quality, your local climate, ceiling height, and whether you're also heating domestic hot water, a shop, or a pool.

Start with heat loss, not floor plan. A well-insulated 2,400 sq ft home in Southern Wisconsin can need meaningfully less boiler capacity than a drafty 1,800 sq ft farmhouse. If you know your home's heat loss in BTU/hr, that's the real number to size against — your HVAC contractor or energy auditor can usually provide this.

Add up everything you want the boiler to heat. Home, garage, shop, domestic hot water, and a pool or hot tub all add load. Crown Royal's lineup spans from residential-focused gasifier boilers up to Biomass/Multifuel systems rated for 300,000–950,000 BTU for larger commercial and multi-building setups.

Don't forget efficiency. A gasification boiler like the Pristine Series burns cleaner and more completely, which means a properly sized Pristine can often out-perform an oversized, older-style boiler while burning up to 60% less wood.

The most reliable way to size a boiler correctly is still a conversation — tell us your square footage, insulation situation, and what you're heating, and we'll help you land on the right model instead of guessing.
