In any outdoor wood boiler, when temperatures are warm — especially in the fall — keeping a fire from going out when there's wood left in the firebox can be difficult. This is primarily because the boiler isn't firing often enough to re-ignite the wood using the remaining coals. A few simple changes can keep a fire going through the shoulder seasons.
- Adjust the differential to 5 or even 3 degrees, leaving the set temperature at 180°F.
- Load less wood more often, keeping each burn to about 12 hours.
- On the Pristine series, if you see bridging, use small pieces of wood covering the nozzle.
- On the Multipass, getting an ash bed established is important — take ashes from the ash pan and put them back into the fire until the ash bed is 2" to 3" above the shaker grates.
- On the Multipass, turn the fan knob to a slower setting, possibly the slowest setting available.
- Mix dry (under 20% moisture) and moderately dry (20–30% moisture) hardwood for the best results at this time of year.
