Regular Maintenance of a Crown Royal Stoves Multi Pass Boiler

January 24, 2026

Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep your Crown Royal Stoves Multi Pass outdoor wood boiler running efficiently and safely. Designed for high heat transfer and long burn times, models such as the 7200MP, 7300MP, 7350MP, and 7400MP rely on clear airflow and clean heat exchange surfaces to perform at their best. Regular maintenance helps reduce wood consumption, improve heating efficiency, and extend the life of your boiler. When done regularly, cleaning the wood boiler is quick and will take no more than 5 minutes.

Why Regular Cleaning Matters

  • Maintains strong airflow through the firebox
  • Maximizes heat transfer in the multi-pass heat exchanger
  • Reduces smoke and creosote buildup
  • Prevents blockages
  • Less smoke when loading firewood
  • Improves burn efficiency and lowers wood usage
  • Helps prevent long-term wear and performance issues

Ash Pan Cleaning (1–2 Times Per Week)

The ash pan at the bottom of the boiler plays a huge role in airflow. If it fills up, combustion air can’t move freely through the firebox—leading to poor burns and reduced efficiency.

How to Clean the Ash Pan

  1. Turn off the boiler's fan using the switch on the side of the boiler.
  2. Wearing gloves and proper personal protection equipment, open the lower door and carefully remove the ash pan.
  3. Empty ashes into a metal container with a lid.
  4. Inspect the area beneath the grate for buildup and clean if needed.
  5. Reinstall the ash pan securely, close the door and turn the boiler fan on.

Recommended frequency: Once to twice per week, depending on burn rate and wood quality.

Note: While it is unlikely that buildup will occur under the grates, inspecting under the grates and cleaning any buildup will catch blockages before they could obstruct the fresh air.

Upper Heat Exchanger Cleaning (Once Per Week)

The upper heat exchanger is where the Multi Pass design really shines. Hot exhaust gases are forced to travel through this area to transfer heat into the water jacket. When fly ash coats these surfaces, efficiency drops fast.

How to Clean the Upper heat exchanger

  1. Turn off the boiler's fan using the switch on the side of the boiler.
  2. Wearing gloves and proper personal protection equipment, open the top door to the multi pass heat exchanger.
  3. Using the cleanout tool provided with the stove clean the fly ash and debris from all sides of the heat exchanger.
  4. Close the door and turn the boiler fan on.

Recommended frequency: Once per week for optimal performance.

Note: Make sure the ash and buildup is pulled out of the heat exchanger and not pushed back as it may increase buildup in the rear of the heat exchanger.

Clean the Top of the Firebox Using the Bypass Handle

The bypass handle will open the first stage of the heat exchanger to allow the free flow of gasses into the top of the heat exchanger. Crown Royal’s bypass handle can also cleaning the top of the firebox with no tools needed.

How to Clean the Top of the Firebox

  1. Turn off the boiler's fan using the switch on the side of the boiler.
  2. Wearing gloves and the proper protection equipment, open the firebox load door for visibility reasons to view any ash that may fall.
  3. Locate the bypass handle which is directly above the firebox door.
  4. Rotate the bypass handle counterclockwise about 10 degrees and pull the handle out beyond the stop.
  5. Run the bypass handle vigrously from the back of the stove until about 18" out from the stove.
  6. Stop once no more ash is observed falling into the firebox and return the bypass handle to its normal operating position.
  7. Close the door and turn the boiler fan on.

Recommended frequency: Once per week or upto once a month for optimal performance.

Note: This is best done with a burned down coals in the firebox. Pulling the bypass handle too farout will cause the metal bypass plate to drop off the shelf. Wearing gloves quickly and safely push the metal place back up onto the shelf while pushing in the bypass rod.

Quick Homeowner Weekly Cleanout Checklist

☐ Empty ash pan and inspect under the grate for any buildup or obstructions (1–2 times per week)

☐ Clean upper heat exchanger (weekly)

☐ Clean top of firebox using bypass handle (weekly or upto once a month)
